Working together, with a common goal, we can make Columbus a better place to call home!

WINNING ESSAY: by Hannah Jefferson

When considering a "A Better Columbus" the first thing I thought about was physical appearance. Our city should be clean, and we should use as less energy and waste as possible. There would be little to any litter on our streets. There is no reason for our city to have this much litter as we do. Our citizens would be responsible and throw their trash away in trash cans instead of the ones they supposedly see in the street and sidewalks.

If nothing else is important, education for the citizens of Columbus should be. If our citizens are well educated, the future of Columbus and our generation will be very optimistic and positive. Without a well-educated city, how can we achieve our maximum capacity. Nonetheless, if we expect citizen involvement, we as a community should make sure our neighbors, as well as ourselves are educated on the happenings in the city.

The city also needs a neighborhood crime watch system and use the police for situations that our citizens cannot handle in a legal and non-violent way. Citizens must feel safe and secure in the city they live in, because if they don’t, who will? People do not want to live in a city where there is a high crime rate, even if their community is included. If citizens are hesitant to leave their homes, a strong sense of community will not be present in relation to certain topics being led by the city council and mayor.

More businesses would also be brought into the city, which would bring in more revenue to the city. We should add more small businesses, and also more retail chains. We should have an equal amount of child and teen-friendly stores, and also stores for our adults that they will enjoy. (Ross, Target, Marshalls, and Dillard’s) This will also increase tourism to the city of Columbus. I am tired of seeing neighboring cities growing, and not Columbus. We can grow just like Starkville, Tupelo, and other popular cities.

Last but not least, a Better Columbus should have a government staffed by citizens of the city. We should also have an open forum of negotiation and expression. Residents must feel as if they will be heard instead of being debated about their opinions and beliefs, even if they are different from others. Therefore, during public meetings, there should be respect for anyone voicing their opinion, unless being a distraction and saying inappropriate things.

Instead of the constant bickering and arguing between our different city leaders for no reason, we should work together for a common solution for the people and for our city. There should not be a ‘Republican or Democrat Columbus’, not a ‘Black or White Columbus’, but there should be ONE COLUMBUS with ONE GOAL: MOVING FORWARD WITH THE CITIZENS IN MIND.
